The Concord Times is one of Sierra Leone's most renown newspapers, which has managed to keep a clear profile throughout the war - and its journalists have won and deserved several international prices. Articles are pasted on a bit irregular basis and the site's design is horrible, but the Concord Times remains the best Sierra Leonean news source. Recommended

The Pool Newspaper, based in Freetown, is an online newspaper, updated several times a week. News headlines and backgrounders. 

Sierra Leone Internet Services is an almost daily updated site with news and polls.

The Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) operates an updated site with daily news. Articles mostly go beyond headline news quality. One of the better places to keep updated. 

Sierra Leone Online is a national portal to Sierra Leone. Features daily news and other services.

Africa Confidential is a bisemanal journal on Africa. They let you enter their database on Sierra Leone of past headlines, which has some basic facts and news about Sierra Leone.

The International Herald Tribune is a daily newspaper edited in Paris with a focus on news from all over the world. Published with The New York Times & The Washington Post. 

The New York Times is one of the most important US newspapers, having a relatively good international coverage, including an Africa page. Most international articles, however, are by AP or Reuters.

The Washington Post is a prestigious US newspaper with an ample international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page or Sierra Leone page, were the last articles from WP are listed.

Times Internet Edition (UK) is the internet edition of the world's oldest daily newspaper. The sister paper, the Sunday Times Internet Edition has its own website. Relatively good international coverage.

The Sierra Leone Newsgroup was founded in 1995 by Alpha Koroma. This Usenet Newsgroup provides a forum for issues of national interest.

Friends of the Earth (FoEI) is the world's largest federation of environmental groups, uniting close to one million activists worldwide. FoEI's member organizations in 61 countries. Its local office in Sierra Leone has a web page with some basic information. 

NewAfrica-Environment offers interesting information about the environment in Africa, among other subjects, and sometimes news about the environment in Sierra Leone. 

 

 

General Information/Read about Sierra Leone

The U.S. government has several informative, though subjective, pages about most countries in the world, including Sierra Leone, being regularly updated. Big resources are used to produce and maintain these pages. The CIA. annual Factbook 2000 is probably the best and most updated collection of data on the web. 
   Another informative site is the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Yet another, the travel warnings to each country of the world, by the same department.

The Ethnologue Database is a catalogue of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Index organizes languages according to language families.

The Sierra Leone Chiefdoms Vulnerabilty Analysis Web site is based on an analysis by the European Union of the conditions in the northern and eastern provinces of the country. Contains the report, mapping sets and an On-line Database of Sierra Leone chiefdoms data.

The Spanish spoken website of the Basque publishing house Ikuska has pages on all African countries with relatively good statistical data and fuller information on ethnic groups.

Alive in Freetown is something like a documentary about the crimes against civilians committed in Sierra Leone. Interesting, although I got skeptical when I saw their reference to the "childish innocence" of the Sierra Leonean people.... 

The Committee to Protect Journalists has a small, but interesting rapport about the situation of the press in Sierra Leone in 1997.

The most informative site about human rights in Sierra Leone is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in Sierra Leone.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has country pages for most African countries, describing the refugee situation. Page contains annually updated texts and statistics about refugees living in the country and internally displaced. Go directly to their Sierra Leone page here.

In the annual World Press Freedom Review looks at the the state of the media in 168 countries, like Sierra Leone, documenting press freedom violations. 1999.

UNAMSIL is the United National peacekeeping mission to Sierra Leone. The site presents the UN mandate and gives you some regular UN news on the latest movements.

Africaguide.com is a website with complete travel information on 51 African countries. In its pages about Sierra Leone you'll find data about region and towns, accommodation, tours and more.

Atevo travel destinations offers practical data about Sierra Leone, besides some travel guides. 

Excite Travel has a site-page on Sierra Leone with some useful information and maps.

Lonely Planet, the famous publisher of budget travel guides, has pages on each African country. On their Sierra Leone Page you'll find country background information and facts (overviews) for the traveler (money & costs, when to go, attractions, activities, getting there, getting around, etc.), if there's not a travel warning. Detailed facts only in the guide books.

The U.S. State Department files travel information and warnings for all countries, world wide. Their annually updated pages contain a short description of the country and useful information about safety, crime rate, health services and insurance. Aimed at U.S. citizens, but useful for anybody.
