UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about Tanzania.

FAO-search - (UN-org.) Their database gives you lots of articles and reports about livestock and agriculture in Tanzania. Tons of free information!

UNDP-search - (UN-org.) You will find a solid amount of documents and reports about development in Tanzania in their database.

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in Tanzania.

WHO-search - (UN-org.) You'll find quit a few documents and reports about health issues in Tanzania and the region doing a search in their database.

WTO-search - In the database of the World Trade Organization you'll find quit a few country-specific documents about trade, subsidies, development, etc. in Tanzania. Write "Tanzania" in the "Document Title" bar.

WoYaa! is a search engine in French and English with links to quite a few sites in French-speaking Africa. Not updated since 1998 (?) and many bad connections.

The Press in Tanzania

Alasiri is an almost daily updated news service in Swahili.

An-nuur is a Tanzanian weekly magazine about Islam in Tanzania, issued by the Islamic Propagation Centre, Dar es Salaam. Swahili.

The East African is a weekly journal published by The Daily Nation Group. Features in depth articles about Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda/Burundi. Good coverage on economy.

Komesha is a daily news service with focus on local news. Swahili.

Tanzania Radio One broadcasts live on the web and the site features the radio's programs.

The Arusha Times is a weekly newspaper for the community of Arusha, Tanzania. It offers news of all categories, with special focus on local events. English.

Press reporting about Tanzania

Africa Confidential is a bisemanal journal on Africa. They let you enter their database on Tanzania of past headlines, which has some basic facts and news about Tanzania.

Africa Online Tanzania is a commercial portal to Tanzania, with some daily news and other services.

AllAfrica (former AfricaNews) is an electronic network handling the distribution of reporting from more than 40 African news organizations and provides a showcase for journalism from across the African continent. You can also go directly to their Tanzania page, listing the latest news stories. Recommended.

East African Standard Online  (on Kenyaweb) brings only headline news, and sports and business headlines.

IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Network) is a UN humanitarian information unit, covering news from all Africa. You can also go directly into their Tanzania archive, where articles from the last months about Tanzania figure. 

NewAfrica, Tanzania offers interesting information about Tanzanian infrastructures, agriculture, business, environment, education, etc.

The Africa and Middle East site of the BBC World Services offers updated news, articles and other media services on Africa.

The Financial Times is one of the world's leading business newspapers with a global outlook. You can also go directly to their Middle East and Africa page.

The Independent is an excellent British newspaper with a wide international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page, where the latest articles about the continent are listed.

The International Herald Tribune is a daily newspaper edited in Paris with a focus on news from all over the world. Published with The New York Times & The Washington Post. 

The New York Times is one of the most important US newspapers, having a relatively good international coverage, including an Africa page. Most international articles, however, are by AP or Reuters.

The Washington Post is a prestigious US newspaper with an ample international coverage. You might want to go directly to their Africa page or Tanzania page, were the last articles from WP are listed.

Times Internet Edition (UK) is the internet edition of the world's oldest daily newspaper. The sister paper, the Sunday Times Internet Edition has its own website. Relatively good international coverage.

The website of the Parliament of Tanzania offers information about its members, a parliamentary diary, Tanzania's budgets, etc. but not updated since 1998...

Tanzania Tourist Board offers complete tourist information with its interactive map, chat and discussion area, among all information on safaris and other activities. Not regularly updated.

East African Music, by Douglas B. Paterson, features music from Tanzania and Kenya, including cd's produced by the author himself. Nice introduction, but not updated since 1999.

The Ethnologue Database is a catalogue of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Index organizes languages according to language families and countries.

Islam Tanzania is an ample web site in English about Tanzania's second religion. Lots of informative articles, also about Islam in general, and a reader's forum. 

The Nyakyusa Homepage offers an introduction to the Nyakyusa people and language, along with research about the Nyakyusa and some traditional stories.

The Sukuma Museum (Mwanza) features traditional arts and culture from the Usukuma region. The museum and Cultural Center provides an artistic, spiritual, intellectual and community focal point for Sukuma culture, which both celebrates and promotes the creativity of traditional and contemporary Sukuma art, architecture, and dance. Good site!

Tanzania's Kiswahili: Chumvi Mtembezi! is a true Swahili site. Offers you to learn Kiswahili, dictionaries, Kiswahili slang, forums, Kiswahili humor, and other stuff that sounded Swahili to me...

The Zanzibar Archives is a fantastic website, in design and content. It is an Internet project to explore the East-African anthropology and presents lots of historical and anthropological information about Zanzibar in a beautiful and logic way.

Zanzibar Art (on Zanzibar Travel Network) is a local, web site, very informative, about art on Zanzibar. It mainly presents some local artists (photography, paintings, etc.).

Zanzibar: Menus & Recipes from Africa (by the University of Pennsylvania) has an ample list of Zanzibar recipes and an introduction to the island's gastronomy.

The Bank of Tanzania is the national bank.

Tanzania Economic Development and Indicators is an annual NewAfrica country profile on their pages about African economy. They use the IMF as their primary source, which should guarantee for their quality.

The University of Dar es Salaam has an ample and informative web site, also informing about their academic programs and offering an African Virtual University service.

The National Tree Seed Programme. The site provides information on seeds procurement, tree improvement, botany, training and marketing.

NewAfrica-Environment offers interesting information about the environment in Africa, among other subjects, and sometimes news about the environment in Tanzania.

General Information/Read about Tanzania

The U.S. government has several informative, though subjective, pages about most countries in the world, including Tanzania, being regularly updated. Big resources are used to produce and maintain these pages. The CIA Factbook 2000 is probably the best and most updated collection of data on the web. 
   Another informative site is the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Yet another, the travel warnings to each country of the world, by the same department. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer ample Health information for travellers to East Africa.

The Ethnologue Database is a catalogue of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Index organizes languages according to language families.

The Spanish spoken website of the Basque publishing house Ikuska has pages on all African countries with relatively good statistical data and fuller information on ethnic groups.

Infoplease.com contains a page about Tanzania with basic data of the country: history, geography, etc.

The International Crisis Group is a organisation with special interest in Africa. In its page about Central Africa you'll find lots of reports about the general situation in Tanzania and other countries.

NewAfrica Tanzania offers interesting information about Tanzanian infrastructure, agriculture, business, environment, education, etc.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has a small, but interesting rapport about the situation of the press in Tanzania in 1997.

The most informative site about human rights in Tanzania is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in Tanzania.

In the annual World Press Freedom Review looks at the the state of the media in 168 countries, like Tanzania, documenting press freedom violations. 1999.

The DirectFund Foundation is a non profit organization that raises critically needed funds for Bugando Medical Center, an 800-bed hospital in Tanzania. 

Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) is committed to facilitating social transformation leading to the creation of a vibrant Tanzanian society. It seeks to promote gender equality and social equity through the empowerment of women and other marginalised sections of the community.

In Afrique francophone, only in French, you'll find links to some sites in francophone countries and francophone Africa in general. 

The Index on Africa' Tanzania page includes various links. The index is created by The Norwegian Council for Africa, with the aim to strengthen the knowledge of Africa and African affairs. Their main page also has news and there are links to all countries on the continent.

Africaguide.com is a website with complete travel information on 51 African countries. In its pages about Tanzania you'll find data about region and towns, accommodation, tours and more.

Atevo travel destinations offers practical data about Tanzania, besides some travel guides. 

Excite Travel has a site-page on Tanzania with some useful information and maps.

The INFOHUB travel guide to Tanzania has useful travel information, including links on accommodation and transportation.

One of the country's most respected travel agencies and one of the best web sites on Tanzania!  Recommended!

Tanzania Tourist Board offers complete tourist information with its interactive map, chat and discussion area, among all information on safaris and other activities. No regularly updated.

The U.S. State Department files travel information and warnings for all countries, world wide. Their annually updated pages contain a short description of the country and useful information about safety, crime rate, health services and insurance. Aimed at U.S. citizens, but useful for anybody. Go directly to their Tanzania Page. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer ample Health information for travellers to East Africa.

Visit Africa Limited is a leading provider of safaris to East & Central Africa. There are pages in English, French and Spanish.

World Online Travel Agency for airlines, hotels, car hires, adventures in Africa has a page on Tanzania. You won't find too much information, but they have detailed maps of the country.

World Travel Guide's entry to Tanzania: This is a good, informative and well organised site. Lists all kind of practical information (passport, visa, etc.) and has an introduction to Tanzanian tourist sites. Guides exist to all countries. You might want to go to their Africa Page. Also a German entry. Recommended.

Zanzibar Commission for Tourism is the national tourism organisation of Zanzibar.

zanzibar.org is a web site presenting some aspects of Zanzibar cultural life and offers lodging on the island.

Zanzibar Travel Network is a local, commercial web site, very informative, about travelling to Zanzibar and with lots of background information about the island, its history, geography and the historical stone town. 

Zara Tanzania Adventures is a tour operator specialized on climbs on the Kilimanjaro mountain.

The Tanzania Media Women’s Association, TAMWA, is committed to the objective of empowering female journalists and has been able to raise awareness and advocate on many issues concerning the rights of women and children. Site gives short introduction.
