Society Searches

Here a list of sites were you can expect to find specific information about society when you search their database on a word like "seniors" or the name of an ethnic group. You should try to narrow your search, and preferably use narrow categories.

UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about society. You should try to narrow your search with words like the name of a country or "cinema".

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in all the world. You should enter the name of a country, region, or any specification you are looking for (like "cinema") to narrow your search results.

Yahoo-search - Yahoo helps you find a lot of websites related to cultures & groups, although you'll have no idea what you'll find clicking their links...


Media

Here, you'll find links to international press, newspapers and news agencies regularly writing about society in general.

 

African Media

Q-Online is a gay South African news and comprehensive resource site. Updated daily with news, reviews, columns and travel info, there are two chat rooms, one for boys and one for girls, and one for personals. There is a new Dating Club, and sites of gay businesses. Recommended.

Africa Online offers some news or information about some groups, but not too much . You'll find a chat service here.

The website Africana.com has a Lifestyle page with some articles and news.

Email Discussion Groups/Listservs for gay, lesbian, bi and transgender Muslims include: Gay-Muslims (mailing list for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning Muslims), Iman (mailing list for Lesbian/Bi/TG Muslim Women & Biofemales), MuslimGayMen (discussion/informational resource for believing Muslim men), TransMuslims (email discussion group for Muslims who identify as transgendered), BiMuslims (email discussion group for Muslims who identify as bisexual) and LGBTQMuslimYouth (safe space for Muslim youth under 25).

Survival International is a worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples, standing for their right to defend their own future and helping them protect their lived. land and human rights. The site features news, events and presentations. Entries in English, French, Kiswahili, Setswana, PortugueseSpanish and other languages. Professional design.

Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) is an organisation created by nations and peoples around the world, who are not represented in the world's principal international organisations, such as the UN. UNPO consists of over 50 members who represent over 100 million persons. News, reports, publications, links, etc.

The Young Muslim Association (YMA), is a Kenyan registered Muslim Charity. Started in post-independence Kenya in 1964, its aims were to look after the well-being of the Muslim Community in Kenya, running a children's orphanage and more. Site give more info.

GaySouthAfrica is the official Internet resource site for the South African gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Site also contains pics gallery.

4-H is an international organisation for youth and children. Their goal is to enable youth to have fun, meet new people, learn new lifeskills, build self-confidence, learn responsibility, and set and achieve goals.

Minority Rights Group (MRG) is an international NGO focusing on the rights of ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities. MRG is based in London. Their informative and regularly updated site has news, links, lists events and gives a profile of the organisation.

Web Fuuta is an ample site by the Fulbe/Fulani/Peul of Futa Jaloon (Guinea). Impressing site in French, English and Pular (Fulfulde), including library.

In Living Africa, A Gambian Story, Chris Covert offers colorful photographs of the Jobartas, a Manding family living in Gambia. Learn about native traditions and current attitudes. 

 

 

 

 

 

Expatriates

 

Black Flight-The Story of African American Expatriates is a comprehensive site covering news, sports, entertainment, lifestyle, discussions and commentary in the African and African American communities around the world.

 

The South African Exiles Site offers information about all South African and Rhodesian expatriates, as well as other friends of these countries.

 

Safrica Band, by Mbuyiselo "Jimmy" Mgwandi and Ntomb'Khona Dlamini, the hardworking band of black and white South African expatriates have been a favorite of cultural events here since 1994.

 

In the website The Freedom Forum Online you'll find a report about West African journalists assess Internet's use, potential, problems: Reaching expatriates is one advantage; rural access a limitation, panelists say.

 

 

 

Gay & Lesbian

The Al-Fatiha Foundation is an international organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Muslims, including those questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, as well as their friends, families, partners, and allies. Al-Fatiha means "The Opening". Includes links and has a newsletter. Recommended

Gay afrol is our own portal for the African LGTB society, documenting the situation of homosexuals in Africa. Gay afrol also provides regular news on the afrol Queer News page. 

Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) was formed in 1989 to provide gay men and lesbians in Zimbabwe with a network to facilitate communication within the gay community. Site includes press clips and other information of the situation of gays and lesbians in homophobic Zimbabwe.

Gay an Lesbian Times is the most important G&L news weekly. Informative and serious, although very California based and oriented.

GaySouthAfrica is the official Internet resource site for the South African gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Site also contains pics gallery.

The International Lesbian and Gay Association is a world-wide federation of national and local groups dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people everywhere. Founded in 1978, it now has more than 350 member organisations. Site includes news.

International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission features action alerts, country profiles and the latest news about gay and lesbian rights worldwide.

Interpride is the International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators. Fancy website, mostly focused on gay pride parades.

Rainbow Organization is the Gay, Bi and Lesbian Organization of the University of Cape Town. Read about its history, activities, etc. But no-updated.

Religious group's policies towards homosexuals and homosexuality attitude towards homosexuality by Christian denominations and other religions.

Queer Jihad is the first of its kind web site dedicated to queer Muslim issues; Queer Jihad is the the queer muslim struggle for acceptance; offers comprehensive resources for LGBTQ Muslims.

Queer Muslims offers resources for LGBTQ Muslims; includes a comprehensive list of resources for transgendered Muslims.

The Mask is a South African Gay and Lesbian site of great interest. Comprehensive resources, links, country pages informing about the situation of gays and lesbians in most African countries. Political engaged and engaging. Recommended. 

TOGS is the Organisation for Gay Sports, based in Johannesburg. Informs about gay sports, events, organisations, etc.

 

 

 

 

Political Groups

African National Congress, The ANC, is the majority party in South Africa's Government of National Unity. Write to President Mandela, Members of Parliament and other ANC office-holders. 

Inkatha Freedom Party, The IFP, from South Africa. Welcome to the Inkatha Freedom Party's Home Page. 

The South African Communist Party  ,SACP, was founded in 1921 and has always been in the forefront of the struggle against imperialism and racist domination.

The Social Democratic Front, SDF; from Cameroon, offers in their website newsflash, press releases, documents and resolutions... 

Movement for Democratic Change, MDC, from Zimbabwe is the most important political party in the opposition.

The Partido Frelimo is The Liberation Front of Mozambique.

The Group for Democratic Development, the GDD, from Egypt, offers their political program here.

The Moroccans website Partis Politiques contains a list with all political parties in Morocco and some liks.  

 

Rastafarians

The Conscious Rasta Press has books, reports and videos for sale.

Jah Rastafari Haile Selasse is a religious Rastafarian site. Gives you an introduction to the Rastafari world or even revelation.

The Rastafari Webring is a web society of lots of Rasta sites. The link is to webring directory, listing all the sites that form part of the ring (with links, of course).

 

Religious Groups

Unitarian International offers information about details of liberal religious groups in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa.

Religious group's policies towards homosexuals and homosexuality attitude towards homosexuality by christian denominations and other religions.

Africa: Religious Studies offers Africa Missions Information on the World Wide Web. This server is provided as a service of the Department of Missions at Abilene Christian University.
