AllAfrica News about Press, Media and Communications is one of the best updated services about African media. Daily updates.

In the annual World Press Freedom Review looks at the the state of the media in 168 countries, with a list of African countries, documenting press freedom violations. 1999.

Article19 is a London based NGO, working for the freedom of speech, as expressed in Article 19 of the Human Rights Declaration, on a worldwide basis. Also features news about press freedom. 

The Center for Peace, War and the News Media is a  non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to supporting journalists and news organizations in their efforts to sustain an informed and engaged citizenry.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has small, but interesting reports about the situation of the press in all African countries in 1998.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ, based in Brussels) is the world's largest organisation of journalists, representing 450.000 journalists in more than 100 countries. On their site, you'll find useful links, updated news, publications and more. Their Africa pages bring you news from the continent.

The International Press Institute (IPI) is a global network of journalists, editors and media executives, dedicated to freedom of the press and improving the standards and practices of journalism. Their site includes press freedom news, publications, links and much more.

The International Women's Media Foundation is dedicated to promote the  women's labour situation in the media. It organizes congress, conferences, publications and studies on around the world. It has a special project in Africa, the African Women Media Center to provide African women journalists the training, resources and tools they need to compete equally with their male colleagues. The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) is a non-governmental organisation with members in 11 of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries. MISA is promoting media diversity, pluralism, self-sufficiency and independence for Southern African media. It offers daily news, a free newsletter and links. 

The Network for the Defence of Independent Media in Africa (NDIMA) is a Pan-African human rights NGO based in Kenya. Their not too regularly updated site contains information about the network.

The Panos Institute, West Africa, works for a democratic West Africa. The MDWA project aims to serve as a catalyst, facilitator and intermediary to help reinforcing the role of the media in the African democratization process. You'll find here also some African media links.

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is a UN agency responsible for the promotion of the protection of intellectual property throughout the world through cooperation among states. Intellectual properties include copyright and industrial properties (registered trademarks, etc.). Site is available in English, French, Arab and Spanish versions.

African Electronic Journals and Newspapers (by Colombia University) has one of the best list of links to all African media you might find online.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has small, but interesting reports about the situation of the press in all African countries in 1998.

MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa) promotes media diversity, pluralism, self-sufficiency and independence for medias in Southern Africa. Site features media news from Southern Africa and administers the Southern Africa Media Development Fund. 

The Media and Communication Studies Site, from the UK, has some interesting articles about international media, media influence, education, etc.

MediaInternet is a site for media buyers and sellers worldwide. It provides real-time access to rates, contact data, audit statements and media kits from over 45,000 global media, and tools to put plans together.

Africa, The Journal of the International African Institute, is the premier journal devoted to the study of African societies and culture. Bad site - only permits you to subscribe.

Africa Confidential is a bisemanal journal on Africa. They let you enter their database on all African countries of past headlines, which has some basic facts and news about it.

AfricNature is a French spoken journal about environment and resources in Africa. Not the best web design, but interesting articles.

The Arid Lands Newsletter is published semiannually for an international readership by the Arid Lands Information Center (ALIC) at  The University of Arizona. The purpose of the Arid Lands Newsletter is to explore events and issues of interest to arid lands researchers, resource managers, and policy makers around the globe.

Balancing Act features a free e-letter covering African internet content and infrastructure developments. Balancing Act is facilitating the development of content for the internet and other new media technologies in Africa.

Business Africa Online is the web version of the same journal, with interesting in-depth articles about features in African economy. Not to frequently updated, though.

History in Africa is a journal of historical method published by the African Studies Association at The State University of New Jersey. Bad site. It doesn't permit you to read their articles, but lists the contents of previous issues.

Jeune Afrique sur Internet is the Internet version of the prestigious, French journal. Brings you regularly updated news and analyses from Africa. French.

The Journal of African Travel-Writing is a US semi-annual print journal presenting accounts of past and contemporary African travel. Its specific aim is to explore Africa as a site of narrative and to publish good writing. Cute.

The North Africa Journal has an extensive web site, also figuring the weekly journal (of the same name). In depth news from the Maghreb region, almost everything for free. You may also receive e-mailed news and subscribers may also download the entire journal.

Sudanic Africa is an annual journal of historical sources. It is an international academic journal devoted to the presentation and discussion of historical sources on the Sudanic belt. The journal typically presents such sources in the original language and in translation, with comments. 

Tam Tam is a French spoken journal about African economy and business. Serious, despite its name.

Worldnet Television Africa Journal is published every Thursday and features TV programmes from Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.

Algeria 
Algeria Interface is a journal, in French and English, with national and international news. Regularly updated and good coverage on policy.

Botswana
The Botswana Gazette is updated every Wednesday and Friday. The journal features some news about Botswana. Good coverage on sport and policy. English.

Cameroon
GCNet Info serves you weekly news from Cameroon in French under the categories politics, economy, society, culture, health and sports.

Le Messager is a Cameroonian weekly publication which is devoted to the quest for democracy in Cameroon. A Weekly Electronic Publication, almost exclusively in French.

Cape Verde

Al-Ahram is the oldest newspaper in the Arab world and Africa, and one of the oldest papers in the world. It offers a daily news service on the web, in Arab and some information in English. Specially interesting is its weekly English version, Al-Ahram Weekly.

Egypt Today is an online monthly updated news service with a great variety of contents. Good coverage on what's new in all the country.

The Cairo Times is an online edition of Egypt's best-selling English language magazine. News updates twice weekly.

Guinea
La Lance offers regularly updated news and features on politics, culture and sports in Guinea. Good national coverage. French.

Le Lynx is from the same publishing group as La Lance. National coverage and frequently updated. French.

Kenya
Coastweek, is a weekly Mombasa-based journal, featuring entertainment, news, shipping, sports and more. Good alternative to the Nairobi press. Also headlines in German. 

The East African is a weekly journal published by The Daily Nation Group. Features in depth articles about Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda/Burundi. Good coverage on economy.

The Karenga'ta Chronicle, by AfricaOnline, has some short news stories. Not too serious nor updated.

Lesotho
Mopheme is a regularly updated media with large features on all themes of general interest. Excellent national coverage.

Liberia
The Perspective is a news service, not daily updated, but with a good international coverage and large features, especially on politics.

Morocco
Al Jarida Al Maghribia is a Moroccan cultural magazine in French. It also brings you daily news from Morocco and the rest of the Maghreb in English.

La Nouvelle Tribune is a weekly journal with a good coverage on economy and business. Ample articles. French.

La Vie Économique is a weekly, successful, Moroccan journal. It focuses on economy, but also it offers news on society, politics, etc. French.

Le Temps du Maroc offers professional and ample reports on international and national politics, economy, society and culture. Weekly journal. French. 

Niger
Les Internautes du Ténéré is by a group of Nigerien friends and offers some information about culture, sports, works, etc. Only in French.

Senegal
Le Walf Fadjeri Online is a weekly magazine with in depth articles. French.

South Africa
African Mining, from South Africa,  is the leading journal on mining in Africa. Here you'll find some reports and articles which are updated in a bulletin every second month. Good service, but it hasn't been updated since 1999... English.

Agenda is a South African feminist magazine, which promotes gender equity in development. It is published four times a year. The web site also features more frequent news bulletins.

Financial Mail Interactive is a  weekly journal about economy and business on South Africa, but also with interest in the international situation. English.

Tunisia

IPS (Inter Press Service) is a mix between non-profit organisation and news agency, providing the most professional news coverage you'll find from the developing world, or "a communications bridge between the countries of the North and the South". Daily new/analyses are provided (to your mail-box, if you like) in English, French, Swahili, Spanish, German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish. The drawback is that you have to pay, but prices are low (if read-only)and worth  it. The only pay-service we recommend.

IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Network) is a UN humanitarian information unit, covering news from all Africa. They also have countries archives , where articles from the last months about all African countries figure.
