Politics Searches

Here a list of sites were you can expect to find specific information about society when you search their database on a word like "racism" or the name of a country. You should try to narrow your search, and preferably use narrow categories.

UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about politics. You should try to narrow your search with words like the name of a country or "crime".

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in all the world. You should enter the name of a country, region, or any specification you are looking for (like "cinema") to narrow your search results.

Yahoo-search - Yahoo helps you find a lot of websites related to world politics, although you'll have no idea what you'll find clicking their links...


Media

Here, you'll find links to international press, newspapers and news agencies regularly writing about politics in general. As most media focus on politics, however, you'll find a more complete list on the Media Index Page.

 

African Media

AllAfrica is an commercial network distributing news from all over Africa, mainly aimed at an American audience. Pages for each and every African country and for some topics, like business, sports, gender, etc. Good place to keep updated.

The Daily Mail & Guardian is South Africa's, or maybe even Africa's, leading newspaper. The site is constantly updated with news, mainly focusing on South Africa and Africa. Special departments of sports, politics and economy, etc. Recommended! 

IRIN (Integrated Regional Information Network) is a UN humanitarian information unit, covering news from all Africa. They also have countries archives , where articles from the last months about all African countries figure. Only updated Monday (afternoon) to Friday. Good alternative.

NewAfrica offers interesting information about African infrastructures, agriculture, business, economy, environment, education, sports, etc. Site getting more and more professional, with updated news services.

 

International press

BBC News works with a lot information about Africa and its political situation. You'll find analyses about it in articles like, for example, Africa: democracy returns or Africa: On the threshold of democracy.

Antiwar.com is a well organized site with constantly updated news, viewpoints and activities about the international situation. 

Sudanese Civil War: 'a new round of peace negotiations' is a article from Arabicnews, who has some previous articles about it.

Organizations

The Africa Policy Information Center (U.S. based) provides information and analysis in order to promote international policies toward Africa that advance economic, political, social justice and human rights. APIC also promotes citizen action to influence public policy. Much useful data. Links.

Alliances for Africa (AfA) is an African non-governmental peace, human rights and development organisation. Through strategic partnerships with local organisations, AfA undertakes programmes to enhance the interface between civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights. 

The Foundation for Democracy in Africa is a Washington based NGO, dedicated to implement the principles of culturally based democratic government within the African society and bringing the countries of Africa into the mainstream of the global economy through free enterprise. Site has news, data, links, etc.

The International Crisis Group (ICG) has its own, very informative web site (Crisisweb). The ICG is a private, multinational organisation committed to strengthening the capacity of the international community to anticipate, understand and act to prevent and contain conflict. Its approach is grounded in field research. Updated news and lots of information, especially about Africa. Recommended. 

The Nonviolence Web  has been built by the volunteer labor. Over six hundred web pages. Over 15,000 visitors. And over a dozen nonviolence organizations which would not be on the web if it weren’t for this initiative. Support the Nonviolence Web and keep this valuable work going! 

Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, KIND,  is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting democracy by strengthening civil society in Africa.

Transparency International is a civil society organisation dedicated to curbing both international and national corruption. An organisation gaining more and more international respect and weight. Informative and well-organized site, with its "Daily Corruption News" site.

Africa, Out of Despair, Hope is a site from Hearts and Minds. In this site, Dave Peterson analyses the democratic situation in Africa. 

The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory University, is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights, wages peace by bringing warring parties to the negotiating table, monitoring elections, safeguarding human rights, and building strong democracies through economic development. 

Power to the people: The Role of Electronic Media in Promoting Democratic in Africa is an analysis of the role of electronic media in promoting the formation of democratic political regimes in Africa.

Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, KIND,  is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting democracy by strengthening civil society in Africa.

Human Rights

Amnesty International (AI) has an extent and excellent web site with news releases, the well known and respected annual reports, and very much more. Amnesty is the world leading organisation working to protect human rights worldwide. Certain parts of the site can also be seen in French, Spanish and Arab. You might want to see AI's reports on a specific country; here's a link to their Country List.

Anti-Slavery International - ESAM is an NGO working against the still-existing practice of slavery. This London based organisation leads the fight against slavery. Informative, "take-action-based" site.

Human Rights Watch is an NGO dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world. It stands with victims and activists to uphold political freedom, investigates and exposes human rights violations and holds abusers accountable. Very informative site, with updated news, publications and more! Good design. Site also available in French, Portuguese, Arab, Spanish, etc.
   Their Africa pages have links to all African countries, news, publications and more.

The most informative site about human rights in Africa is the annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices Released by the U.S. State Department. Big, elaborated report about the state of human rights in African countries.

In the annual World Press Freedom Review looks at the the state of the media in 168 countries, documenting press freedom violations. 1999.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has a small, but interesting rapport about the situation of the press in some African countries in 1998.

The International Save the Children Alliance is the coordinating organ of the national Save the Children organisations. The alliance currently comprises 26 organisations around the world. Working in over 100 countries, Save the Children is the worlds largest independent movement for children. The site has some info about the organisation and its work.
