Society Searches

Here a list of sites were you can expect to find specific information about society when you search their database on a word like "law" or "history". You should try to narrow your search, and preferably use narrow categories.

UNIONS is the United Nations International Organizations Network Search. Here you can search within all the UN-system, including sub-organizations. Expect to find too much documents, reports, articles, etc. about culture. You should try to narrow your search with words like the name of a country or "cinema".

UNESCO-search - (UN-org.) Their database contains loads of document related to education, science and culture and related items in all the world. You should enter the name of a country, region, or any specification you are looking for (like "cinema") to narrow your search results.

Yahoo-search - Yahoo helps you find websites related to society, although you'll have no idea what you'll find clicking their links...

UNESCO is the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It has its headquarters in Paris, France and 72 field offices and units in different parts of the world.. Their site contains lots of data about events, programmes, statistics, publications, documents, partners, etc. The site can also be accessed in French, Spanish, Arab and other languages.

The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions has 215 affiliated organisations in 145 countries and territories on all five continents, with a membership of 125 million of whom 43 million are women. Very informative site, including world news, special sites on child labor, equality, human rights, trade and labour standards and much more. Site also available in French and Spanish.

Survival International is a worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples, standing for their right to defend their own future and helping them protect their lived. land and human rights. The site features news, events and presentations. Entries in English, French, Kiswahili, Setswana, PortugueseSpanish and other languages. Professional design.

Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) is an organisation created by nations and peoples around the world, who are not represented in the world's principal international organisations, such as the UN. UNPO consists of over 50 members who represent over 100 million persons. News, reports, publications, links, etc.

The Young Muslim Association (YMA), is a Kenyan registered Muslim Charity. Started in post-independence Kenya in 1964, its aims were to look after the well-being of the Muslim Community in Kenya, running a children's orphanage and more. Site give more info.

GaySouthAfrica is the official Internet resource site for the South African gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Site also contains pics gallery.

Rainbow Organization is the Gay, Bi and Lesbian Organization of the University of Cape Town. Read about its history, activities, etc. But no-updated.

4-H is an international organisation for youth and children. Their goal is to enable youth to have fun, meet new people, learn new lifeskills, build self-confidence, learn responsibility, and set and achieve goals.

Ethnology, the website made by Al Mashriq offers information about people of languages from all the world.

The Institute of Ethnology at Jagiellonian University offers some information about general ethnology, documentation and library.

The German Institute of African Studies has a website with a lot information about the continent, but only in German.

Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, at Harvard University, founded in 1866 by George Peabody, is one of the oldest museums in the world devoted to anthropology.

Social Science Information Gateway, from U.K. offers a complete information about Ethnology, Ethnography and Anthropology from all the world.

Society-Ethnology is a book website with some tittles of ethnology in English, German and Spanish.

The Institute for Languages at Uppsala University, in Sweden, has a complete page on ethnology in English, with links to other sites.

The Ethnology Museum of Vienna offers in its website complete information about its collection, exhibitions and others services.  

The National Museum of Ethnology from Osaka, Japan, contains information about its public activities and some links.

Food & Drinks

African Recipes - The Congo Cookbook - has a large variety of African recipes, presented in a very delicate way for the American/European reader. This is a perfect place to start if you want to learn something about African cooking and read some interesting features asides. Well organized, and you can look up recipes by region or ingredient.

The Bergkelder, situated in Stellenbosch, is one of the most important winery in South Africa.

Boschendal is the largest state in South Africa and famous for their wines.

Clos Malverne tell us about Devon Valley, winery located in the heart of Stellenbosch, in South Africa and  is owned by Simon Pritchard who produced his first wine in 1988. The winery has a reputation for well structured, deeply colored and intensely varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.

The website on Klein Constantia wine tell us about its history. Klein Constantia estate, part of the farm that produced the Constantia wine prized by Europe's aristocracy in the 18th century, is considered one of South Africa's premier crus, its wines winning both local and international awards. 

The Food Museum  has a list of several food staples from tropical and temperate climates, with basic lexical information. Well organized, but basic information. They are still working on it, it may seem.

Online Chef is a well organized website with lots of recipes, among images and explains. 

Sweet Dreams by Tracy is a website with a lot of  photos, recipes, ideas, links & more for cake decorators. 

Recipes & more is a elegant collection of recipes for chocolate and other gourmet delicacies. By Godiva Chocolatier.

Ice Cream Parlor  is a website with lots of traditional and exotic ice cream and sorbet recipes.

Japanese Sweets offers in this pages recipes for home made sweet sekihan, a celebratory red rice, and rice cakes. Very interesting. Did you know something, about  kusamochi or zunndamochi, for example?

Curlie's Bakery Recipes is a website about only Australian bakery recipes and lot of delicious photos!

Vegetarian Journal Recipes offers you  a variety of vegetarian and vegan recipes. It's not so bored to be vegetarian with them.

Africa South of the Sahara offers a complete page about African History with all possible categories.

The Creation of the OAU is a website that is based on the interviews and personal papers of the late Ketema Yifru, who was the Ethiopian Foreign Minister during the 1960s. The website provides detailed information on the process behind the creation the OAU. It also is a reference resource on the OAU's founding fathers, giving a short biography of all. The site's editor is Ketema Yifru's son, Makonnen Ketema.

H-Africa is a member of H-Net Humanities and Social Sciences OnLine consortium of scholarly list. H-Africa  encourages the interdisciplinary discussion of Africa's history and culture and African studies in general. 

Rhodesia and South Africa: Military history, by Richard Allpor tell us about the history and offers book list. 

The UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History celebrates the world's diverse cultures and rich visual arts, like Africa.

World History Archives: The History of Africa offers lots of documents on African cultural, social, economic history, etc.

The Parliament of South Africa  proves information to enable the citizens of South Africa to participate in law-making and other parliamentary processes.

Wits Law School at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South African Journal on Human Rights Call for submissions. It offers information about laws, the constitutional court, the supreme court of appeal, etc.

Sexuality.org, Society for Human Sexuality, offers positive and helpful information on all forms of human sexuality.

Directory of Sexuality Organizations Worldwide has a page with addresses of some African centers. 

Medieval Feminist Index: Scholarship on Women, Sexuality and Gender offers indexes journal articles, book reviews, and essays about women, sexuality and gender in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT)  has information about decrease the incidence of HIV infection and STDs amongst sex workers through advocacy, education, counselling and support.
