Government guarantees greater freedom of press in Cape Verde

afrol News / A Semana, 4 May - The government, in the person of cabinet minister Sara Lopes, guaranteed Wednesday that legal and institutional conditions would be created for the full exercise of freedom in the press in Cape Verde. The announcement came on May 3, World Press Freedom Day.

In her message, Lopes reiterated the government’s determination to promote material and personnel conditions for media outlets in order to guarantee greater access to knowledge and information by citizens.

In order for this to occur, the government is hoping for the support of all professionals in the sector to promote the principles of ethics, rigor, quality, impartiality and objectivity, all of them fundamental to the journalistic profession.

The minister also highlighted media professionals’ willingness to participate in the modernization of the sector, pointing out the Association of Cape Verdean Journalists (AJOC) as an example of the rebirth of journalists’ consciousness of their importance and responsibilities.

Cape Verde is already listed as one of Africa's freest countries, regarding the position of the press, according to organisations like Repoters sans Frontieres (RSF).
