Rocket attack scares Ivorian PM

afrol News, 2 July - Guillaume Soro, the Ivorian Prime Minister last Friday escaped an assassination attempt on his life at the Bouake International Airport. The plane carrying him was shot by a rocket, resulting to the death of four members of his delegation while leaving scores of people severely injured.

Though some arrests have been made and investigations launched into the incident, but the Ivorian Prime Minister could not hide his worries. He said the attack is a clear testimony of the growth of violence because it is abnormal to shoot an aircraft.

Until his appointment to the post of the Premier, which was made possible after the signing of the Ouagadougou accord on 4 March, Mr Soro had been leading the ex-rebel Forces Nouvelles group.

He wondered why the conquest of peace looks like a war in Côte d'Ivoire. "We were full of determination to lead the war of peace and this must continue," Mr Soro told Ivorian TV, noting that his goal is to set Côte d'Ivoire for peace and organise democratic and transparent elections before leaving office.

Mr Soro called for an international inquiry to probe into security lapses in Bouake Airport.

The rocket propelled grenades attack has been a cause for concern and the airport is now under the control of the United Nations security. The Ivorian Prime Minister was in the northern capital to preside over an official ceremony.

The reasons behind his attempted assassination are yet to be unveiled publicly.
