Nigeria's ex-governors charged

afrol News, 13 July - Two of Nigeria's ex-governors - Joshua Dariye and Saminu Turaki - have been arraigned in court charged with graft and money laundering. Both men flatly denied the charges.

Nigerian authorities had earlier arrested Turaki, the governor of Jigawa and a colleague of Abia state, Kau Orji after they were accused of abuse of office. Turaki is a sitting member of parliament.

Kalu, 39, a quintessential politician, administrator and business tycoon was brought to court today. He is expected to be slammed with further charges.

Dariye, a former governor of central Plateau State, was also among several Nigerian officials rounded by the anti-graft commission.

Some time back, he had made news for jumping a bail in Britain. He was accused of stealing US $9 million during his tenure in office.

He had fled the country after he relinquished power in May, but later decided to return.

Dariye also bounced back from impeachment after he had won an appeal five months later.

He was sacked by the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo who doubted his competency to handle the raising communal clashes in 2004.

The governors would not have been arrested or prosecuted if they were still in office.
