Sudan expels diplomats

afrol News, 28 August - In less than a week, three foreign officials have been issued with expulsion order by the Sudanese authorities who accused them of interfering in their internal affairs.

The expelled officials include two diplomats: the Canadian Charge d’Affaires, Nuala Lawlor and European Union Ambassador, Degerfelt Kent, to Sudan. Following an apology by EU, Sudan withdrew its decision. However, Canada that condemned the expulsion in the strongest possible terms, refused to bow down.

Sudanese authorities have also expelled the regional Director of a non-governmental organisation, Care. Paul Parker has been ordered by Humanitarian Aid Commission of Sudanese government to quit the country within 72 hours.

Parker, a US citizen, has been threatened with legal action should he failed to obey the expulsion order.

His expulsion came after Sudanese government blamed him for going beyond the mandate of his mission - meddling into Sudan’s political and security affairs - which is not expected of a country manager of a humanitarian organisation.

Sudan was annoyed by comments that reportedly emanated from Care office in Khartoum that conditions in Darfur would continue to deteriorate.

Meanwhile, a Deputy Secretary of Sudan’s Foreign Ministry, Ali Karti, has explained the reasons behind the expulsion of the two diplomats. He said apart from establishing contacts with the rebels and opposition, the diplomats have also been pilling pressures on the national security services to release opposition leaders accused of coup attempt.

He said the relations between Sudan and the international community does not mean the country would submit to western concepts.
