Armed forces arm Ugandan cattle rustlers

afrol News, 3 September - Single individuals of the armed forces have been supplying arms to Uganda’s Karamajong warriors, a 2007 survey on small arms has revealed.

Based in Karamoja, the north-western Uganda, Karamajong warriors have become notorious for cattle theft, armed banditry and frequent attacks on civilians for several years.

The survey also labelled Karamoja as an area with the highest proliferation of small arms in Uganda.

The findings came following admissions of weapons dealing between the local defence units and Karamajong. Additionally, weapons similar to those used by the military were found with Karamajong fighters.

But the survey categorically made it clear that this outcome does not confirm the implication of the Ugandan armed forces at the institutional level.

The Spokesman of the Uganda military unit tasked with overseeing the disarmament in Karamoja, Lt Henry Obbo, said some auxiliary forces and soldiers have been implicated in smuggling arms to the warriors. He said the situation has dramatically changed in recent times.
