SA reggae king assassinated

afrol News, 19 October - Armed robbers attacked and shot dead South Africa's reggae king, Lucky Dube, on Thursday, police confirmed.

Dube, 43, a famous musician globe-trotter and freedom fighter, was shot by hi-jackers in a suburb in Rosettenbille suburb, Johannesburg while he dropped off his son from school.

The police Spokesman Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said the incident, which happened at around 8:20pm, was witnessed by his son who called for help. It was too late to rescue Dube's life.

The attack has left the son traumatised. His assailants are still at large, with the police appealing to the public to provide any useful information on the high profile assassination.

Before he left for the World Rugby final between his country and South Africa, President Thabo Mbeki condemned the assassination in the strongest possible terms and urged the police to speed their investigation into the case.

Before the shocking incident, Dube had released his 21 album.

His music career began with the singing of Zulu traditional songs before recording his premier album with the Super Soul band in 1982.

The musician, who later turned a king in the art of singing, quickly shifted to raggae. He had produced several albums, but his international popularity rose after he had produced Slave, Prisoner and Together.
