South Africa census reveals over 8% population increase

afrol News, 26 October - The community survey carried out in South Africa's 10 provinces has recorded an estimated population of 48.5 million people, showing an overall increase of 8.2% over the 2001 figures, the country's national statistics office disclosed.

South Africa's 2001 census results showed that the country's population increased from 40.5 milllion in 1996 to 44.8.

The community survey results are based on the new boundaries, with Western Cape recording the largest percentage of increase in population between 2001 and 2007. Gauteng province followed with 13.9%.

Eastern Cape, Free State and North West experienced an increase of less than 5%.
