Somali Premier resigns

afrol News, 29 October - Ali Mohamed Ghedi, the Prime Minister of Somalia’s Transitional Government, has resigned from office.

Ghedi handed over his resignation letter to the transitional President, Abdullahi Ahmed Yusuf before disclosing the news to Somali lawmakers who had earlier blamed him [Ghedi] for presiding over a failed government.

Somali Premier had just returned from the neighbouring Ethiopia where he llegedly rallied support to stay in office after he had received mounting national and international pressures to resign.

The development came on the heels of strained relations between the Ghedi and President Yusuf. Their troubles have been sparked off rivalries between the Ghedi’s Hawaye [largest tribe] and Yusuf’s Dared [second largest tribe] clans.

The resignation is likely to deepen the Hawiye clan’s opposition to the transitional government.

Since the1991 civil war, Somalia has been bereft with a stable government. But the country has become a battle ground for insurgents since the Ethiopian-backed government forces flushed out the Islamic Courts Union from office in December 2006.

Daily insurgency - mainly centred in the capital Mogadishu - has led to a state of anarchy, resulting to several deaths.
