Sudan effects major reshuffle

afrol News, 11 December - Sudanese leader Omar el-Bashir has effected a major cabinet reshuffle, leaving six ministers [health, information, finance, transport, culture, science and technology] and a presidential adviser in the cold.

The new cabinet is a true reflection of el-Bashir's ruling National Congress party.
Sudan has been administered by a government of national unity since 2005, following the signing of comprehensive peace accord with Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). This accord officially ended Sudan's long-running civil war.

But the SPLM withdrew from the unity government on 11 October following disputes over the ownership of the oil-rich state of Abyei and the deployment of Sudanese government troops in Southern Sudan states of Kordofan, Upper and Lower Nile.

Sudanese officials held crisis meetings in a bid to settle their scores. Both el-Bashir and Salva Kiir, President of Southern Sudan and Vice President of the unity government, agreed to set up committees to deal with the two problems.

Southern Sudan ministers are expected to return to the unity government as soon as the two sides thrash out their differences.

President el-Bashir had earlier reshuffled his cabinet in October to appease SPLM leadership after he had disagreed with them over the implementation of the 2005 peace agreement.
