Kenya AG favours vote tally

afrol News, 3 January - Kenya's Attorney General, Amos Wako, has called for an independent investigation into vote results led to the controversial re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.

Wako ordered "a proper tally of the valid certificates returned and confirmed should be undertaken immediately."

The Attorney General told the national television that the tallying of the disputed presidential votes to verify the winner could be done outside the courts, a move earlier suggested by the Catholic Bishops.

It is believed that a proper tallying of the votes would ease the waves of deadly political and tribal unrest that Kenya is face with.

The Orange Democratic Movement of Raila Odinga that has been crying foul has not immediately reacted to the Wako's statement, which is a complete departure from the government's position. The government had repeatedly asked Odinga to seek redress at the courts.

However, some Kenyans receive it with a pinch of salt and asked how a proper tally would be carried out in the face of the disappearance of forms 16 and 16A filed by presiding officers from the electoral commission's safes in Kenyatta International Conference Center in the capital Nairobi.

Others said the move is a calculated attempts to legitimise Kibaki's disputed victory.

The Attorney General's statement followed the disruption of the planned ODM million people rally at Uhuru Park in Nairobi on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the AU Chairman and Ghanaian President, John Kufuor has cancelled his trip to Kenya to media between the government and the opposition. The cancellation followed the government's refusal to entertain international mediation on the crisis that claimed the lives of over 300 people as well as displace 70,000 others.
