Kenyan MP assassinated

afrol News, 29 January - Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has condemned last night's shooting to death of an elected opposition parliamentarian in the capital Nairobi.

Kibaki appeals for calm, asking Kenyans to wait for the outcome of the police investigation.

Mugabe Were, a member of the Orange Democratic Movement representing Embakasai district in Nairobi, has become the first leading politician to succumb to the post electoral violences that divides the country along tribal lines.

He was shot by two gunmen as he drove to the gate of his house just after midnight, the police said.

ODM leader, Raila Odinga, suspected a foul play, blaming the government for the act.

Were's assassination came after the killing of a 41-year-old Father Michael Kamau Ithondeka in Nakuru at the weekend. The Kikuyu clergyman was killed by irate Kalenjin youths.

The opposition law maker's killing sparked off further violence in Nairobi, with angry mobs setting houses on fire. This resulted to the death of four people.

Protesters who gathered outside the fallen politician's compound were forced to disperse when police fired them with tear gas.

The re-election of Kibaki has sparked off angry protests by the supporters of Raila Odinga, accusing the government of stealing their candidate's victory. Several international diplomatic efforts to bury the hatch in Kenya has failed.

While fresh inter-ethnic clashes continue to rock the nation, the former UN chief Kofi Annan is busy engaging the two sides for a dialogue on Tuesday.

However, many people fear the escalation of what proved to be "revenge inter-ethnic killings."
