Annan briefs Kenya parliament

afrol News, 12 February - The former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, on Tuesday briefed Kenyan lawmakers on the progress of his crisis mediation.

Annan did not elaborate on the details of the talks, but it is apparent that the government and the opposition are few miles away from agreeing on a unity government before fresh polls are organised.

Believing that the country is still reeling with fragile security, Annan did not agree on a recount.

He said the deal will include comprehensive constitutional, judicial and electoral reforms.

The talks have been moved from Nairobi for three days purposely to escape media publicity. Besides, both sides have been warned not to discuss the contents of the talks until the negotiator briefs the media.

The former UN chief was confident of emerging out with a negotiated settlement.

"The current crisis is a big challenge but it provides an opportunity for Kenyan leaders to steer the country to a new level of stability," Mr Annan told a special parliamentary session.

Annan said both President Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga, who have been briefed on the progress of the talks, are in total support of the mediation.

While commending the government for lifting a ban on live media coverage and holding of political rallies, Annan urged Kenyan MPs to go to their constituencies and preach peace and tolerance. They have been asked to tell their constituents that both sides have agreed to give peace a chance and investigate into the bloody political unrests.
