AU trumpets Somalia mission

afrol News, 19 February - The African Union (AU) has urged the need for a new United Nations peacekeeping mission to be sent to Somali to replace the AMISOM [AU mission in Somalia].

The continental body's Permanent UN Observer, Lila Ratsifandrihamanana, dispatched a report to the UN Security Council, calling for the speedy deployment of the UN mission. Ratsifandrihamanana said the deployment falls within the responsibility of the Security Council.

She also stressed the need to provide financial, logistical and technical support to the AU mission in Somalia, believing that “despite its complexity, the situation in Somalia can still be recuperated with the help of all sides involved and the international community."

Due to the worsening political, security and humanitarian situations, UN has not approved the deployment of peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a country that had been bereft of a proper functioning government since the overthrow of the former President Siad Barre in 1991.
