UN applauds Uganda accord

afrol News, 21 February - United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has applauded the government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) for signing an accord to regulate accountability for the crimes committed during the more than 20-year conflict in northern Uganda.

UN chief dispatched a statement, urging both sides to "renew their efforts to expeditiously conclude a comprehensive peace agreement in order to bring lasting peace with justice to the people of northern Uganda.

He said the greatest challenge is to ensure that the credible implementation of the agreement becomes a reality.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague had maintained that arrest warrants against indicted LRA rebels, including its founder, Joseph Kony remains still holds. LRA rebels have throughout expressed worry about the ICC warrants, fearing they might endanger peace talks.
