Uganda, LRA reach peace deal

afrol News, 26 February - The government of Uganda and its northern rebels [Lord's Resistance Army] have agreed on the last item on their peace talks agenda in the South Sudan capital of Juba: disarmament, demobilisation and re-integration of former combatants.

This development precedes the signing of a final comprehensive peace agreement by the two sides on Thursday in Juba.

Chris Magezi, the Spokesperson of the government representation at the talks said they have agreed on disarmament, demobilisation and re-integration in principle.

"We have virtually concluded the peace talks," he said.

A rebel delegation has been assigned to hold consultation with the LRA founder, Joseph Kony, who is currently based in the forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kony, who claims to be defending the Ten Commands of God, has been indicted by the international war crimes in The Hague.

Ugandan authorities had earlier lodged a complaint to South Sudan, expressing anger over the relocation of 200 LRA members - fighters, women and children - in the Central African Republic. The move has been seen as a violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement signed by the government and the LRA.
