Darfur arrests campaign starts

afrol News, 27 February - A group of organisations have launched a campaign aimed at pressurising the United Nations to effect the immediate arrest of the two leaders accused of committing war crimes in the western Sudan region of Darfur.

Despite international pressures, Sudan has refused to hand over Ahmed Haroun and Ali Kushayb, Humanitarian Affairs Minister and leader of the Janjaweed militia, respectively. Both men have been indicted by the International Criminal Court.

Backed by some 45 organisations, the Wanted for War Crimes campaign is also calling for the UN to impose sanctions or freeze the assets of all those who continuously provide shelter to the indicted men.

Apart from asking people to sent protest emails to the UN, campaigners also spread wanted posters.

The Sudanese government's decision to task the indicted minister with investigating human rights violations in Darfur last year had angered rights activists.
