UN lauds Annan's mediation

afrol News, 5 March - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has lauded Kofi Annan [the former UN chief] for leading a successful and timely mediation of Kenya's post-electoral violence.

“His role has brought not only peace and stability in Kenya but also the whole region,” the UN chief said after holding talks with Mr Annan in Geneva.

While assuring UN's continued engagement in the country's mediation process, Mr Ban urged President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga to faithfully implement their power-sharing agreement they reached on 28 February.

Shortly before leaving Kenya at the weekend, Mr Annan appealed to all Kenyans to work towards unity and development. Though he was replaced by the former Nigerian Foreign Minister, Oluyemi Adeniji, Mr Annan promised to monitor the progress of constitutional and institutional reforms.

Mr Kibaki and Mr Odinga held their first meeting after agreeing to a power-sharing deal. Both leaders have expressed their commitment to implementing the power-sharing deal.

But they have to wait for the parliament to convene to legislate the necessary constitutional and institutional reforms on power-sharing structures.

An inquiry into the disputed December presidential elections and the ethnic violence that resulted to the killing of over 1,000 people has been agreed upon. They also saw the need to create the truth and reconciliation commission to heal political and ethnic wounds.

"We want to work as one team to unite Kenya. We want to heal those wounds that emerged after the elections," Mr Odinga said.
