Nigerian party elects leader

afrol News, 11 March - Nigeria's ruling People's Democratic Party of President Oumar Musa Yar'Adua has finally sealed its looming power struggle after the election of Vincent Ogbula as the party's new National Chairman at a congress.

Mr Ogbula - the party's former General Secretary - was elected in the capital Abuja at the weekend.

His election followed a fierce power struggle and internal conflicts between the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and President Yar'Adua. Most people believed that Mr Obasanjo was not happy about the way his hand-picked successor has been running the affairs of the state.

As a way of diffusing the party's power struggle, party delegates thought it fitting to elect a neutral candidate. Mr Ogbula was seen as a unifying factor who would foster reconciliation and unite the already divided PDP members.

However, political pundits said Mr Ogbula's election meant that Mr Obasanjo has lost control of the PDP. He had thrown his weight for the candidature of Sam Egwu, the former Governor of Evonyi State.
