Joint trial for Congo warlords

afrol News, 12 March - The International Criminal Court has joined the cases of the former warlords of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui.

The two men would return to the dock on 21 May 2008 when their charges would be confirmed. But according to court officials, each suspect shall be accorded the same rights as if such suspect were being tried separately.

Both Katanga and Ngudjolo Chui are standing trial for their alleged co-responsibility for committing war crimes during and after a joint attack on the village of Bogoro, Ituri, by the Patriotic Resistance Forces and the National Integrationist Front, on 24 February 2003. .

Katanga, who had been held since early 2007, have had his previous pre-trial proceedings hindered by lack of a Lingala interpreters.

During a previous trial, Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui, also a former Colonel in the Congolese army, had chosen Jean-Pierre Kilenda as his legal representative.

Kilenda had challenged the admissibility of the case and asked the court to release his client with or without conditions.
