Kenya deputies back coalition

afrol News, 19 March - Kenyan lawmakers have unanimously endorsed bills supporting the establishment of a power-sharing government.

The bills guarantee constitutional amendments on a grand coalition involving the ruling Party of National Unity and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement. As such, the post of a Prime Minister and two deputies will be created.

Kenya’s political leaders signed a peace deal last month after they deadlock over the disputed presidential results, culminating in bloody violence that had taken great toll on life and property.

Through a successful, but tedious mediation championed by the former UN chief Kofi Annan, the two sides buried the hatchet and agreed on the formation of a grand coalition government. Under this arrangement, President Kibaki retains his position while Mr Odinga becomes the Prime Minister.

The two leaders, who equally share power, are expected to appoint cabinet members soon.

The coalition will be dissolved when one of the parties withdraws its participation, and
ironically, no provision was created for the holding of a fresh election should the coalition fails.

A former South African Judge, Joham Kreigler has been appointed to lead a commission of
international experts to launch a three-month inquiry into the electoral crisis.
