Zim police probes poll fraud

afrol News, 30 April - Zimbabwean police on Wednesday confirmed investigations into about 100 cases of electoral fraud connected to the country's general elections.

Zimbabwean Police Commissioner General, Augustine Chihuri, said the police has recorded 100 cases of electoral fraud, but many more cases continue to be discovered by the day.

"Placing wrong candidates in office who were not selected by the people is evil and should never be allowed at all cost," Mr Chihuri said.

"This is a new phenomenon in the electoral history of Zimbabwe. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to expose the source of this cancerous treachery. All those involved will be brought to book and prosecuted."

He said the police was "aware that some individuals promised a Kenyan-style insurrection should election results not go their way and most certainly we hold them responsible for what we are seeing today," adding that "incidents of burning and stoning of public vehicles, burning of houses in the communal lands and assaults have been received."

He however said the police was fully prepared to tackle this challenge.

"The old trick of claiming human rights violations when somebody steps on your toe yet you yourself are poking other people's eyes will not work this time around."

Several electoral officials from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission were arrested [some prosecuted] after the ruling Zanu-PF of President Robert Mugabe accused them of being bribed to twist counting of votes in favour of the opposition. Also voters have been arrested for voting many times during 29th March combined elections.

Presidential results were yet to be made public, amid several reported claims of violence against supporters of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change of Morgan Tsvangirai. The party claimed that 15 of its supporters lost their lives and hundreds displaced after they were attacked by the ruling party thugs.
