UN scribe condemns Darfur attacks

afrol News, 9 May - The United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has condemned the Sudanese government's recent bombardments on a market, school and water installations in North Darfur.

Mr Ban wonder why the bombardments were "aimed against inhabited areas, including areas where there are children."

Bombardments carried out by the Sudanese air force has bombarded northern Darfur villages of Umm Sidr and Shegeg Karo had left at least 14 people dead, with one of the bombs hitting an elementary school.

The bombardments were heavily criticised by national and international organisations, including humanitarian agencies operating in Darfur.

The Secretary General is equally "deeply concerned" about the rising acts of banditry in the troubled Darfur region, which "add risk to and complicate humanitarian operations while preventing the UN mission in the region to fulfill its mandate."
