SA produces record diamond

afrol News, 15 May - The discovery of yet another record diamond has been reported in South Africa where an exceptional 6.30 carat fancy yellow was found at a mine along the Vaal River's western bank.

The octahedron diamond shape - expected to yield huge value - was discovered in Lonrho Mining firm's Schmidtsdrift Mine.

Lonrho Mining started operations in April 2006, and has since produced 16,395 carats of diamonds from 3,255,969 tons. Its discoveries included 328 stones in excess of 5 carats in size, a 235 carat stone and two 66 carat stones.

In August last year, South Africa's North-West province mine made history by producing the world's biggest diamond.

The precious stone was discovered in the Guateng province.

Under tight security, the excavated diamond was transported to a secure vault in Johannesburg where it had been photographed.
