ICC investigates attacks against peacekeepers in Darfur

afrol News, 18 July - International Criminal Court (ICC) is to commission investigations on attacks against peacekeepers in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region.

ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told media in New York yesterday on occasion of 10th anniversary of Rome Statute, that the court would try those responsible for any attacks against peacekeepers.

Three years ago, Security Council asked Mr Moreno-Ocampo to investigate violence committed in Darfur, where some 300,000 people have been killed since 2003.

The dead, perished either through direct fight or disease, malnutrition or reduced life expectancy, while another 2.7 million people have been displaced from their homes.

Mr Moreno-Ocampo is already investigating last September's attack by rebels on South Darfur town of Haskanita, which resulted in deaths of several African Union (AU) peacekeepers.

He said he had names of alleged perpetrators and two names of commanders who were allegedly responsible for this attack, but still looking for evidence.

Prosecutor called on rebels to provide evidence and stop any crimes, reiterating that anytime they commit any attacks against peacekeepers, it is under his authority and will investigate that.

The attack has been condemned by UNAMID's force commander, Martin Luther Agwai, who vowed they would not let such criminal acts against peacekeepers slow down their mission in Darfur.

Mr Moreno-Ocampo presented evidence to ICC against Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, for alleged war crimes in Darfur, including genocide earlier this week.

Mr Al-Bashir is being charged with three counts of genocide, five counts of crimes against humanity and two counts of war crimes.

Presented evidence shows that Mr. Al-Bashir masterminded and implemented plan to destroy in substantial part Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa groups, on account of their society.

If indicted, Sudanese President would become first sitting head of state to be charged by ICC.
