'Egypt plays crucial role in Africa'

afrol News, 25 July - Egyptian Foreign Minister boasts of the crucial role his country is playing towards helping African nations to achieve sustainable development.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit has down played notions from some quarters that the North African country has been playing "diminishing" role in Africa.

He said Egypt's African development support programme has been limited to its capabilities.

"It is a pity that some people believe that Egypt does not exist on the African continent," Mr. Gheit told Egyptian television on Thursday. He said people who trade such beliefs need to know that Egypt has the largest diplomatic presence in Africa, as it operates 52 embassions and missions across the continent.

In addition, Egyptian Foreign Minister said his country's well representation in many peacekeeping operations on the continent speaks volumes of its interest in the affairs of the continent.

Mr. Gheit has denied reports that Egypt has shifted its interest from the South to the North as evidenced by its participation in the summit of the Mediterranean Union, which was held few days after Egypt hosted the African Union summit in Sharm al-Sheikh.

He said Egypt's participation in the Paris summit does not mean it has abandon its obligations to the South.

Due to its historical role, regional and geographical positions, he said Egypt has been concerned about many issues in Africa, the Arab world, Europe and the United Nations. He added that the North African nation has vital interests in many directions.
