Zim talks 'progressing well'

afrol News, 8 August - Zimbabwe's power-sharing talks involving negotiators of the ruling Zanu-PF party and the opposition are "progressing extremely well," South Africa's government spokesman said.

"The government as the mediator will not be giving any details about details of the talks except to say that they are progressing extremely well," Themba Maseko told a news conference.

South African President Thabo Mbeki has been mediating the Zimbabwean crisis, which had reached its peak after the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from the run-off barely four days before the polls, citing campaign of terror on his supporters.

President Robert Mugabe was declared the winner of the June polls in which he became the sole candidate.

Mr. Mugabe and Mr. Tsvangirai met for the first time in a decade last month agreeing to hold crisis talks. Negotiators are yet to sign a deal, though the deadline to wind up talks had passed. The two parties on Wednesday issued a statement calling for an end to post-electoral violence.

Zimbabwe's senior security officials have reportedly travelled to South Africa to meet mediators who have been holding business at a secret location.
