Francophonie isolates Mauritania

afrol News, 28 August - The Permanent Council of the Francophonie has become the latest international organisation to isolate Mauritania's ruling military council.

The organisation's decision, announced in a statement, came after an extra-ordinary session in the French capital Paris.

Mauritania's suspension was triggered by the ousting of former president Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi by the military on 6 August.

Confirming the suspension, the council chaired by the secretary general, has taken the move in accordance with the provisions of the 3 November 2000 declaration, which guarantees suspension of any country for overthrowing a democratically elected regime.

The Francophonie council urged the military to quickly restore constitutional rule and release the deposed president and other political prisoners.

Mauritania was also slapped with sanctions by the African Union.
