Zimbabwe Politics Mbeki expected to resume Zim talks on Mondayafrol News, 5 September - South African President Thabo Mbeki is expected in Harare on Monday to revive stalled power-sharing talks between ruling Zanu PF and opposition parties.Talks which resumed over past weekend have once again stalled when president Robert Mugabe and Mr Morgan Tsvangrai disagreed on how executive powers will be shared.
"President Mbeki is expected here next week for resumption of ongoing negotiations facilitated by Southern African Development Community," deputy information minister Bright Matonga said.
President Mbeki's spokesman, Mukoni Ratshitanga, said was unaware of the visit.
Mr Tsvangirai rejected a power-sharing deal that would have seen security ministries reporting to Mr Mugabe and economic and social ministries to himself.
Mbeki has come under fire for not being tough with Mugabe. Regional leaders have grown impatient with the deadlock but have failed to persuade the parties to bury their differences. An opposition official said the MDC wanted the African Union and United Nations to rescue the talks.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's main opposition party appealed for help from regional bloc SADC to unlock stalled power-sharing talks as President Mugabe has threatened to form a new cabinet today.
"It is very clear that the deadlock in the current dialogue has to be unlocked," Nelson Chamisa, spokesman for Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change, told SA FM radio.
"It is better to be talking than fighting. Our country is so important, so precious. We need to resolve all our differences through dialogue for prosperity and stability in the country," he added.
Mr Tsvangirai beat Mr Mugabe in 29 March election but did not have enough outright majority votes to avoid a June run-off vote, which was won by Mr Mugabe unopposed after Mr Tsvangirai pulled out citing violence and intimidation against his supporters.
The election was condemned around the world and drew toughened sanctions from Western countries whose support is vital for reviving Zimbabwe's ruined economy. By staff writer © afrol News |
