AU urges urgent funds for its peace operations

afrol News, 8 October - The African Union Commission on Wednesday made an urgent call for funding for body's peace operations on the continent.

The call came on the heels of a meeting of by the AU Peace and Security Council on Tuesday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Also present at the meeting were members of the AU-UN High-Level Panel on the financing of the African Union-led support peace-keeping operations.

Established by Resolution 1809 and adopted by the UN Security Council in April this year, the panel is led by the former Italian prime minister and chairman of the European Union Commission, Romano Prodi.

The continental body is currently engage in peace-keeping mission in some of its member states, including Somalia and Sudan's Darfur region. In the absence of funding, the AU will not be able to maintain its peace-keeping operations, which was why its Peace and Security Council had been assigned to advise the union on flexible and sustainable peace support operations.
