ANC dismiss early election call

afrol News, 16 October - Ruling Africa National Congress (ANC) in South Africa has dismissed reports that it is considering to call an early election to ambush plans by dissatisfied top party officials to form a splinter party.

Following an overnight meeting by central body of ANC, party has reacted to reports by saying it was to deal with all those party members threatening stability of the party.

Yesterday, former premier of Gauteng province, Mbhazima Shilowa resigned from party and announced openly that he was chief convenor of the proposed consultative meeting by digruntled ANC members mainly believed to be pro sacked president Thabo Mbeki.

Local media had also reported yesterday that some ANC executive commitee members were pushing for early elections in a bid to destabilise new party formation plans, as more regional and provincial executive members are said to also be on way out of party.

Factionalism in ANC became apparent since December last year at party's main congress where former president Thabo Mbeki was embarassingly outvoted in favour of current party leader and populist Jacob Zuma.

Mr Zuma who is likely to become president of country if ANC wins next year election has been in and out of court fighting several cases on his involvement or collaboration in post-apartheid arms deal scandal.
