Record drug bust in SA - Is the World Cup the trigger?

afrol News, 20 March - South African police seem to have made a well discovery after another bust today of 52kg of ephedrine powder following the Tuesday discovery of 565kg of the same powder in an aircraft’s cargo.

However, no arrests have yet been made, with police officials saying they are also investigating if there was any connection between the two consignments.

Today's bust, said to have been destined for a Durban recipient has an estimated street value of R15.6 million, adding to the R170 million estimated value of the Tuesday bust.

Ephedrine powder is said to be used in the making of popular street drugs such as Tik and CAT. Both consignments, according to police officials seem to have been destined for a local manufacturing firm.

The busts have raised even more security eyebrows in the capacity of South African security ahead of the two major FIFA World Cup events this year and next year.

South African airport security has recently been stepped up following two embarassing arrests of the national carrier staff and crew at Heathrow in London, found in possession of Cocaine and Cannabis.

The latest busts said to be a record discovery in the South African drugs fighting history, is said to have been a result of concerted effort and tip offs to the security agencies.
