Senegal Culture - Arts African contemporary art festival to open in Dakar
afrol News, 4 May - From tomorrow and for one entire month, the Senegalese capital will be organising the 7th Biennale of Africa Contemporary Art; Dak'art. Since its inauguration in 1992, the Dakar biennale is consolidated into becoming the leading international art event of the entire region. This year's edition especially features the late Senegalese poet and ex-President Léopold Sédar Senghor, but also gives space to represent 87 other artists from 27 countries.

Egypt Culture - Arts | Society Egypt's top mufti bans statues
afrol News, 3 April - The highest religious authority among Egyptian Muslims, Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, has issued a fatwa banning the display of statues. Although the fatwa focuses on statues in private homes, it has raised fears that it mat be misused by Islamists wanting to harm Egypt's wealth of pre-Islamic art on historic sites and in museums. Sculptors and their work are generally condemned.

Africa | Benin Culture - Arts Beninese artist exposes African injustice in Europe
afrol News, 1 August - Romuald Hazoumé is exhibiting a modern combination of installations, video, sounds, smells and recycled objects throughout Europe to expose African states' hypothetical "fourteenth and final" constitutional article: "Given all the rights mentioned above - you better manage by yourself." Jerry cans from Benin dominate the exhibition, which soon comes to London.

Ethiopia Culture - Arts | Science - Education Axum obelisk has returned to Ethiopia
afrol News, 26 April - Ethiopia's national pride, the obelisk of Axum, has finally returned home 68 years after Italian soldiers carted it off to Rome during Mussolini's invasion. The iconic monument is now being re-installed by archaeological and conservation specialists, who in the process discovered more archaeological treasures under a parking lot.

Cameroon Culture - Arts Intrafrika+ art exhibition culminates in Cameroon
afrol News, 30 March - The Intrafrika+ exhibition, which has toured much of sub-Saharan Africa, is currently making its last stop in Cameroon's capital, Yaoundé. Artists from Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Nigeria are presenting their works reflecting the interaction with American and European art, covering the theme termed the "Atlantic Triangle".
