Somali Islamists ban music; "intimidated" top artist agrees

afrol News / Awdal News Network, 4 September - Maryan Mursal, Somalia's top night club performer in the early 1970s and currently a patriotic voice admired by Somalis in the Diaspora, says that she is fully in support of the banning of music by the Somali Islamic Courts and urges all Somali artists to quit singing and performing drama. Her opinion causes shock among other Somali cultural personalities.

Africa gets own MTV channel today

afrol News, 22 February - The US music and entertainment broadcaster giant MTV today launches the first-ever pan-African music television channel. The Johannesburg-based 'MTV Base' aims at putting "African artists in the spotlight" and hopes to reach an audience of 1.3 million households in sub-Saharan Africa.

At the same time, her record company is honoured for its production of so-called "world music", mostly due to its production of Ms Évora's records.

New book celebrates Miriam Makeba

afrol News, 17 December - The second-ever auto-biography of Miriam Makeba, South Africa's famous singer, composer, actress, humanitarian and women rights activist, has been launched with success in Johannesburg. More open than in her 1988 biography written while in US exile, Ms Makeba now says: "I am free to what I want to say." Numerous black and white photographs of the artist underline her colourful life.
