Zambian artist competing for $83,000 in Norway

afrol News, 9 September - A Zambian artist, Anawana Haloba of Livingstone, along with three other young artists - the Norwegians Ida Ekblad, Marius Engh, and Lars Laumann - have been nominated for the StatoilHydro art award 2009. The US$ 83,000 prize will be awarded in Oslo, Norway in December.

Cameroonian songbird jailed for rioting

afrol News, 10 October - Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) has condemned three-year prison sentence and excessive fine imposed on well-known Cameroonian singer-songwriter Lapiro de Mbanga (real name Pierre Roger Lambo Sandjo) who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly being part of anti-government demonstrations.

Algerian singer Khaled "assaulted in Morocco"

afrol News, 6 June - The Algerian press reports that world famous raï singer Khaled, an Algerian national, was assaulted by spectators while holding a concert in the Moroccan city Meknes. The assault is seen in connection with Khaled's waving of a Western Sahara flag at a recent concert in Spain.

Somali Islamists ban music; "intimidated" top artist agrees

afrol News / Awdal News Network, 4 September - Maryan Mursal, Somalia's top night club performer in the early 1970s and currently a patriotic voice admired by Somalis in the Diaspora, says that she is fully in support of the banning of music by the Somali Islamic Courts and urges all Somali artists to quit singing and performing drama. Her opinion causes shock among other Somali cultural personalities.
