afrol News / SciDev.Net, 1 July - The warming of Lake Tanganyika over the past century has made the lake less productive - posing a serious threat to fisheries, according to a new series of studies.

Nile water resource dispute splits region

afrol News, 14 May - Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda have signed a controversial deal to regulate and share the waters of River Nile, despite protests from downstream nations Sudan and Egypt. Ethiopia at the same time opened its first major dam on the Nile.

Herders receive support to improve pastoral resources

afrol News, 9 February - Chadian nomadic herders in the arid sub-Saharan Sahel region, will benefit from a grant of $19.5 million to help secure water sources. The project will be funded through the United Nations agency dedicated to eradicating rural poverty.

afrol News, 8 February - The Nigerian government has approved a multi-billion hydro electricity dam project in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, the state governor, Namadi Sambo has said.

BirdLife cares for wetlands

afrol News, 2 February - Today is World Wetlands Day and this year’s theme – Caring for wetlands: an answer to climate change – highlights the bonds between wetlands, biodiversity and climate change. “Caring for wetlands is part of the solution to climate change”, said Melanie Heath – Senior Advisor on Climate Change at BirdLife. “If we manage them well, wetland ecosystems and their biodiversity have a vital role to play in mitigating against, and adapting to, climate change”.

afrol News, 14 December - The uneven distribution of water resources in Africa warrants stronger regional cooperation and effective water governance on the continent, said UN Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Abdoulie Janneh, in Copenhagen as the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties entered its sixth day.

$39 million injected to improve Ethiopia’s pastoralists lives
