Released captive elephants "do fine in the wild"

afrol News, 25 February - Scientists have shown that African elephants raised in captivity can be released to the African savannah with relative ease and do fine. Trials done in Botswana give hope for re-establishing threatened elephant range states.

Gabon officials seize chimpanzee body parts

afrol News, 19 January - Wildlife officers in Gabon have arrested five men accused of possessing illegal animal products, including those of endangered species. As there are traditions of bushmeat consumption in Gabon, the arrests signal a stricter law enforcement.

Central African Rep clamps down on poachers

afrol News, 10 December - An operation by special police forces earlier this week in the Central African Republic led to the arrest of a key wildlife smuggler and seizure of elephant tusks and cat skins.

Mountain gorilla population recovering

afrol News, 8 December - A new mountain gorilla census in Rwanda and Congo Kinshasa (DRC) shows a 26 percent increase in population of this endangered species during seven years. Mountain gorillas are among the region's main tourist attractions.

Mauritania protects unique flamingo colony

afrol News, 16 November - Mauritanian authorities have initiated a fauna protection programme in its Diawling National Park in the mouth of River Senegal to protect a major colony of "dwarf flamingos" that could develop into a tourist attraction.

Cameroon "new gorillas" need protection

afrol News, 2 November - A Cameroonian environmentalist group is lobbying for the establishment of a new national park at Cross River on the Nigerian border to protect a little known sub-species of gorillas only living there.

Botswana independence festivities moved by rare birds

afrol News, 1 October - For the 44th time, Batswana citizens this week celebrated their independence. Also in Maun, close to the Okavango Delta, traditions were upheld - although they had to be moved to protect a rare bird.

Central African bushmeat hits European market

afrol News, 1 July - More than five tonnes of illegal bushmeat is being smuggled in personal luggage each week through the Paris airport alone. Most bushmeat comes from Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Congo Kinshasa (DRC).
