Wade, Jammeh, Gnassingbé join opening of Casa África

afrol News, 8 June - As the Spanish Foreign Ministry's prestigious Casa África ("Africa House") is to open its doors in Las Palmas on Tuesday next week, highly profiled African leaders have announced their participation. The Presidents of Senegal, The Gambia and Togo, together with the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, have confirmed their arrival.

Over 100 Canary Islands companies established in Africa

afrol News, 6 June - During the last decade, businessmen from the Spanish autonomous Canary Islands, located off North Africa, have discovered the trade potential on the neighbour continent. More than 100 Canarian companies have been established in Africa, mostly in Morocco and Cape Verde, but also in Mauritania and Senegal.

Mauritania plane hijacking ends in Gran Canaria

afrol News, 15 February - A passenger aircraft of Air Mauritanie, servicing an interior route, this afternoon was hijacked soon after take-off in Nouakchott. Passing Western Sahara, the plane finally landed in the Canary Islands, where Spanish police raided it and detained the hijacker. A motive is yet to be established.

New facility to boost Ghana-Spain trade

afrol News, 3 January - A Canary Island company, Canary Impex, has announced the establishment of a new logistic operation in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, to create a distribution centre for the growing number of Spanish products finding their way to West Africa.

Morocco-Canary Island ferry to start in 2007

afrol News, 22 November - A final decision to launch a ferry route between the Spanish Canary Island of Fuerteventura and the southern-most port of Morocco, Tarfaya, has been made. The new line, which is to transport both persons and goods, is to be inaugurated no later than next summer, the autonomous government of the Canary Islands has announced.

Spain demands African deeds to stop migrants

afrol News, 4 September - After a record number of illegal West African migrant arrivals to the Canary Islands this weekend, the Spanish government hardens its tune towards African governments. Spain would "not tolerate" more arrivals and that West African countries "ignore bilateral agreements" on how to stop the migration flow.

Senegal cancels repatriation deal with Spain

afrol News, 1 June - Shocked by the humiliating conditions in which 99 illegal Senegalese immigrants were repatriated from Spain's Canary Islands, the Dakar government has suspended the foreseen repatriation of 524 further migrants. Arriving Dakar, the handcuffed returnees spoke of "treason", as they had been promised a flight to the Spanish mainland. They never had agreed to repatriation.

Sharp increase in Canary Islands aid to Africa

afrol News, 29 March - The government of Spain's autonomous Canary Islands has looked through its economic aid to West Africa - mostly nearby Morocco - during the last ten years and found that it had totally co-financed 165 projects with euro 17 million. Aid levels have steadily grown, and for 2006, the Canary Islands have budgeted euro 8 million for Africa. Now, transport links between the archipelago and north-west Africa are to improve.

Sahrawi President on official visit to Canary Islands

afrol News, 29 November - The President of the exiled Western Sahara government, Mohamed Abdelaziz, today started an official visit to the Spanish autonomous Canary Islands, where he is meeting local government leaders. President Adbelaziz, who earlier criticised Canarian business ties with Moroccan occupied Western Sahara, praised the "excellent relations" with the Spanish archipelago.

West Africa's Canary Current to be protected

afrol News, 1 November - The Canary Current, which provides relatively cool and nutrition rich water to the West African coast from Morocco to Guinea, hosts an important marine ecosystem that is now to be better protected. The seven coastal countries bordering the Canary Current are seeking to find a new management model and to counter overfishing.

West African media network to be established by afrol News Canarias

afrol News, 23 May - afrol News' newly established daughter company in Canary Islands has entered agreements with the government of the autonomous Spanish islands and a grouping of independent West African media to establish a news exchange network among the free media of the region. The project aims at strengthening press freedom in West Africa through empowering independent media and through technology transfer.

Conservatives leave Canary Island govt

afrol News, 15 May - The nationalist party of Spain's autonomous Canary Islands today announced it would not continue to rule together with the conservative party but rather form a minority government to be able to implement its main political aims, such as a strong and visible policy towards Africa. The move was necessary to assure support from Spain's socialist central government.

"Africa House" in Canary Islands confirmed

afrol News, 13 May - Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Moratinos, yesterday officially announced that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the presitgious "Africa House", and Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero promised the full support by the central government in Canary Islands' plans to become "a bridge to Africa". High state and business officials of the archipelago congratuled themselves of the victory, which they hold will start a new era in Spain's relations with Africa.

"New era" in Canary Islands' ties with El Aaiun

afrol News Canarias, 15 March - The airliner Binter Canarias this weekend inaugurated its first regular flight connection between the Canary Islands and El Aaiun in Western Sahara. A large business delegation met with the Moroccan authorities of the city, announcing "a new era in the relations between the two regions" due to the connection and a new business representation office.

Direct flights to connect Canary Islands, Western Sahara

afrol News, 11 March - The airliner Binter of the Spanish Canary Islands tomorrow is to launch its new regular flight connection between the islands and El Aaiun, the capital of Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. A strait of only 200 kilometres separates the Canary islands from Morocco and Western Sahara, and trade connections are now booming.
