Comoros gets regional fisheries monitoring centre

Recent analyses show that a great part of the island's drinking water sources have been polluted by the volcano, leaving inhabitants in search of alternative water sources.

Comoros volcano eruption over for now

afrol News, 1 June - Mount Karthala, one of the world's most active volcanoes, this week again scared residents on the major Comoran island, Grand Comore. An impressive but risk-less lava eruption brought back memories from December last year, when 200,000 islanders had to flee and toxic ashes polluted water, soils and pastures. Geologists on Grand Comore now say the lava stream has stopped and hold the eruption is over - for this time.

"Ayatollah" of Comoros sworn is as President

The Muslim cleric with an affection of turbans used his first speech as Comoroan President to counter rumours of being an Islamist and fundamentalist.

Mutated Chikungunya virus caused Indian Ocean epidemic

afrol News, 24 May - Researchers at the French Institut Pasteur have managed to retrace the origin and evolution of the Chikungunya virus that is causing a major epidemic in the Indian Ocean. Viral strains isolated from Réunion and the Seychelles clearly demonstrated a small mutation from its East African origin while passing from Comoros to Réunion, aiding the virus to reproduce more aggressively in mosquitoes. Around 275,000 persons have so far been infected during the current Chikungunya outbreak.

Religious leader tipped next President of Comoros

"The election has been a walkover for Sambi - he has taken between 70 and 75 percent of the votes on all three islands," a local diplomat commented.

Presidential campaigning kicks off in Comoros

Misanet / IRIN, 6 April - Campaigning for the presidential elections in Comoros is underway, testing the Indian Ocean islands' fragile power-sharing arrangement. "Everything is going well. Thirteen candidates have been approved by the court and campaigning has started," Ali Said Mdahoma, secretary of the National Elections Commission, told the UN media 'IRIN'.

afrol News, 28 March - The editor of the independent Comoran weekly 'L'Archipel', who also leads the national press organisation, was detained for over two days following critical reports in his newspaper. The weekly had disclosed dissatisfaction within the army after alleged corruption and favouritism. Comoros holds the dubious world record in military coups and coup attempts.

AU to send troops as Comoros prepares polls

afrol News, 23 March - A total of 14 candidates have registered with the electoral commission to fight for the presidency of the Union of Comoros, to which the incumbent is not eligible. The 14 May poll will be the first real test to whether Comoros has managed to break its vicious circle of coups since the 2001 power-sharing constitution. To make sure, however, the African Union (AU) yesterday authorised the deployment of troops on the archipelago.

Misanet / IRIN, 3 March - Presidential primaries in Comoros are officially due on 16 April, but a hold-up in donor funding has sparked fears of delays. According to an official government statement released yesterday, preliminary polls on the Indian Ocean islands will take place on 16 April and the presidential election will be held on 14 May.
