2009 World food prize laureate goes to Ethiopian scientist

afrol News, 11 June - The US State Department has named Dr Gebisa Ejeta of Ethiopia as the winner of the $250,000 World Food Prize for his monumental contributions in the production of sorghum, one of the world’s five principal cereal grains, which have dramatically enhanced the food supply of hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa.

Alleged coup plotters denied bail

afrol News, 26 May - The Ethiopian court has ordered that the 41 alleged coup plotters to remain behind bars while prosecution prepares to lay the charges. The group was arrested more than a month ago for allegedly plotting to overthrow the Ethiopian regime and to assassinate the top leaders.

afrol News, 17 March - Ethiopia has this week run out of Coca-Cola after its local bottler suspended operations saying it no longer had enough foreign currency to buy bottle tops. The closure of the factory on 12 March saw the factory sending home more than 1,000 employees on forced annual leave.
