afrol News, 16 March - The archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe today was informed it had met its economic reform goals set by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), meaning it is eligible for massive debt cancellation. Debt relief from all of São Tomé's creditors is set to amount to US$ 99 million.

EU nets fisheries deal with São Tomé

afrol News, 13 March - The European Union (EU) and the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe have reached a new fisheries agreement that is to enter into force on 1 June. Out of the 43 European fishing vessels that may operate in São Toméan waters according to the new deal, 26 are to be Spanish.

São Tomé airport repairs hinder flight ban

afrol News, 4 January - Rebuilding of the runway of São Tomé's only international airport are advancing rapidly, following a December threat by the Portuguese airliner TAP to cancel all flights to the archipelago by 13 January if standards did not improve. São Tomé and Príncipe managed to secure rapid funding from Taiwan to realise the repairs.

afrol News, 4 April - The conservative party of President Fradique de Menezes won a largest number of seats to the parliament of São Tomé and Príncipe after polls held this Sunday. The National Election Commission (CEN) has almost finished the vote count and concludes that the President's party will be guaranteed at least 23 out of parliament's 55 seats, thus able to form a coalition government.

Election re-run in São Tomé after irregularities

afrol News, 28 March - As the first partial results from Sunday's troubled election in São Tomé and Príncipe indicate a victory for the President's party, authorities have decided that almost 10,000 citizens will get a new chance to vote next Sunday. They had been hindered from entering the polling stations by protesting groups, trying to organise an election boycott.

São Tomé asks for help to stop cholera epidemic

afrol News, 2 December - The Ministry of Health of São Tomé and Príncipe has asked for international aid to help out with the ongoing cholera epidemic in the small island nation. Several hundred cases of cholera have already been reported and at least 17 persons have died in the outbreak.

São Tomé-Nigeria oil blocks finally awarded

afrol News, 1 June - Five offshore oil blocks in the joint development zone between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe were finally awarded tonight, in the zone's second licensing round. The big winner was the controversial company ERHC Energy. The licensing had been troubled by a five-month delay, multiple corruption charges and frictions between the governments of Nigeria and São Tomé.

New oil block awards after São Tomé corruption scandal

afrol News, 25 May - Licensing of oil blocks in the Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Zone (JDZ) is set to resume after a delay of five months. The delay came after a scandal involving corruption charges and the temporary resignation of São Tomé's Natural Resources Minister Arlindo Carvalho, which only ended after the personal intervention by Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo.

São Tomé cholera outbreak spreads rapidly

afrol News, 10 May - Health workers and UN agencies are concerned about the rapid spread of cholera in São Tomé and Príncipe. As of 9 May, 130 cases and 3 deaths have been officially reported. Most of the island’s population of an estimated 140,000 lives within 10 kilometres of the outbreak area.
