"Public debate in Benin being silenced"

afrol News, 24 June - Several media and civil society organisations in Benin have been forced to dance to government's tune, abandoning their role in democracy in fear of censorship and losing government contracts worth several millions of CFA francs, human rights activists are complaining. Benin has until recently been known as the African country most respecting press freedom.

afrol News, 19 February - A magistrate's court in Benin capital Cotonou today jailed three of the country's journalists to six months in prison after they were found guilty of libel. Benin until now has been seen as Africa's freest country when it comes to activities of the press.

Benin, Nigeria, Togo power connection launched

afrol News, 16 February - Benin, Togo and Nigeria yesterday inaugurated a power cable linking the three countries' national grids and aimed at improving the insufficient electricity infrastructure in West Africa. Nigeria will increase its power exports and is expected to generate annual revenues of about US$ 14.4 million from the power interconnection.

Benin President praises Bush in Washington

afrol News, 14 December - Beninese President Thomas Boni Yayi today met with his US counterpart in the White House, where he praised American contributions to peace and development to the West Africa region. He however urged President George Bush to contribute more in the WTO negotiations over cotton, where Beninese and West African cotton is loosing out to highly subsidised US cotton.

Regional scientific cooperation and the sharing of genetic material is emphasised in the project.

Benin opts to maintain death sentences

afrol News, 1 June - The capital punishment will not be abolished in Benin, at least not for the moment. This was decided by the government of Benín and a large number of parliamentarians this week, holding that it was necessary to stick to this much criticised punishment to avoid that the country becomes a refuge for international criminals. Human rights groups already have denounced the government's decision and demand an abolition of this cruel punishment.

Yayi Boni is Benin's next President

afrol News, 23 March - Benin's national electoral commission (CENA) has announced that Yayi Boni won Sunday's run-off presidential election with almost three quarters of the votes. The 54-year-old, a former banker, will be sworn in as Benin's President on 6 April, replacing current President Mathieu Kérékou.

Benin President doubts ongoing poll's legitimacy

Misanet / IRIN / afrol News, 6 March - Counting is underway in Benin today after a calm though at times chaotic presidential poll seen as critical to the future of the nation. Yesterday's polling had been problematic, with many stations having to stay open till late night. Even outgoing President Mathieu Kérékou criticised a falsification of the voters' register and indicated that the whole poll could be found fraudulent.

Loan to boost agricultural development in Benin

afrol News, 20 February - Beninese Minister of Agriculture Fatiou Akplogan has secured a US$ 10 million loan to "boost non-farm activities" in Benin's rural areas. Some 50,000 farmers are to get access to credits and new markets in a project that aims at diversifying Benin's rural economy.
