afrol News, 19 February - A magistrate's court in Benin capital Cotonou today jailed three of the country's journalists to six months in prison after they were found guilty of libel. Benin until now has been seen as Africa's freest country when it comes to activities of the press.

Economy - Development Benin, Nigeria, Togo power connection launched
afrol News, 16 February - Benin, Togo and Nigeria yesterday inaugurated a power cable linking the three countries' national grids and aimed at improving the insufficient electricity infrastructure in West Africa. Nigeria will increase its power exports and is expected to generate annual revenues of about US$ 14.4 million from the power interconnection.

Society | Human rights Benin opts to maintain death sentences
afrol News, 1 June - The capital punishment will not be abolished in Benin, at least not for the moment. This was decided by the government of Benín and a large number of parliamentarians this week, holding that it was necessary to stick to this much criticised punishment to avoid that the country becomes a refuge for international criminals. Human rights groups already have denounced the government's decision and demand an abolition of this cruel punishment.

Politics Yayi Boni is Benin's next President
afrol News, 23 March - Benin's national electoral commission (CENA) has announced that Yayi Boni won Sunday's run-off presidential election with almost three quarters of the votes. The 54-year-old, a former banker, will be sworn in as Benin's President on 6 April, replacing current President Mathieu Kérékou.
