afrol News, 28 June - Last month, the expelled people of the Chagos Islands, an archipelago claimed by Mauritius, thought they had achieved a breakthrough in their four-decade fight to return to the land that taken from them. The London High Court ruled that the 2,000 expelled islanders must be let to return. But a new Foreign Office appeal will delay the return for at least one year.

afrol News, 23 February - Tourist arrivals for the year 2007 are expected to reach 850,000 representing a growth of 7.8 percent, the government of Mauritius revealed today. Gross tourism receipts for 2007 were expected to be around rupees 35.9 billion (euro 828 million), compared to rupees 31.9 billion (euro 736 million) last year.

In Réunion, the hardest hit island, the season is described as a disaster and strategies to "reconstruct" the entire sector are being launched. afrol News, 23 May - Mauritius is one of three or four countries short-listed for the setting up of the "Continental Hub Earth Station" in the wake of the implementation of the Pan-African e-network Project. The India-funded giant project - estimated at more than US$ 1 billion - is to connect 53 African countries through satellite, fibre optics as well as wireless links, in addition to provide tele-medicine and tele-education to Africans.

afrol News, 6 April - While Mauritius and the French island of Réunion are reporting of a decreasing number of people being infected with the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus, the number of deaths attributed to the epidemic is reaching 160. Despite earlier claims from Seychelles that "no tourists" had been infected, European clinics are registering a growing number of persons returning from the Indian Ocean islands with the disease.

afrol News, 4 April - A group of 102 Chagossians living in Mauritius and Seychelles has finally been granted a chance to visit their Indian Ocean archipelago, from which they were all evicted in the 1960s to construct a US military base. The British archipelago is claimed by Mauritius. Islanders are left three days to visit deserted villages and graveyards. According to several Chagossians living in Britain, they were not invited to the historic visit, causing loud protests.
