Moroccan King sabre-rattling with Algeria

60 injured after Moroccan-Sahrawi clashes in Dakhla

afrol News, 23 July - At least 60 people are reported to be injured and two missing during clashes between hundreds of Moroccans and Saharawis engaged in fishing in Itereft town, 100 kilometers from the city of Dakhla, the chairman of the Committee Against Torture in Dakhla, El Mami Amar Salem said.

He called for a replacement of the UN mediator in the Western Sahara conflict, Peter van Walsum.

Western Sahara-bound fishing vessel hijacked

afrol News, 12 June - Activists from the environmental group Greenpeace have hijacked a fishing vessel in the Swedish port of Gothenburg, which was to fish off Western Sahara. The Cook Island-registered vessel is accused of "piracy", environmental destruction and violating Swedish embargo on fishing off the occupied territory.

Mauritania denies shifting side in Sahara conflict

afrol News, 6 June - Mauritanian officials have emphasised they are not shifting sides towards Morocco in the conflict over Western Sahara, contrasting media reports originating in Morocco. Mauritania's relatively new government confirms it is to stay neutral in the conflict and maintain its recognition of the exiled Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

Global shipping shies away from Western Sahara phosphates

afrol News, 5 June - A third international shipping company has bowed into pressure to quit its assignments in ports in occupied Western Sahara. The Hong Kong-based shipping company Jinhui Shipping thus follows Norway's two shipping companies Arnesen Shipbrokers and R-Bulk, which have stopped shipping out phosphates from the territory. More are expected to follow.

Morocco "planning military attack on Sahara"

afrol News, 21 May - According to press reports in Spain, the government and army of Morocco are making preparations for a military attack on the territories controlled by Western Sahara's Polisario Front since a UN-brokered ceasefire in 1991. The alleged "preparations" are to be a reaction to the increased civilian activities by Polisario in its "liberated territories".

afrol News, 15 May - The declining humanitarian assistance in the Sahrawi refugee's camp in Algeria leaves children with severe malnutrition. According to a Norwegian Church Aid report to be published next week, one out of five children who have grown up in refuges camp in Algeria are suffering from acute malnutrition.
