afrol News, 29 August - According to new data made public today, the urban unemployment rate in Cape Verde has increased by 2.2 percent during the second trimester of this year, compared to the previous trimester. This puts the present rate of urban unemployment in Cape Verde at 16.6 percent. 

The urban unemployment rate in Cape Verde, according information released today by the Cape Verdean Institute of Employment and Professional Training, has increase from 14.4 percent at the beginning of the year to 16.6 percent presently. 

According to the data analysed by the Praia-based institute, the increased urban unemployment experienced this year was affecting both sexes equally. The Institute of Employment states that "a growth the unemployment rate for both sexes was verified" and has affected and continues to affect, principally, "the younger generation of the age group between 15 and 24 years." 

Within this group, the increased unemployment rate registered during the period was even of 6.2 percent, compared to the first trimester of the year. 

According to today's broadcasting from the Cape Verdean 'Radio Comercial', the growing urban unemployment rate had affected the archipelago's islands in different ways. The island of Sal had registered an increase in unemployment by 6.2 percent while Santa Catarina on the island of São Filipe, on the other hand, was the only place where the unemployment rate had diminished; from 26.2 percent down to 25.7 percent.

Breaking down the unemployment rates by economic activities, "the sector with the heaviest weight with the loss of employment is the one of construction with 22.1 percent, followed by the sector of commerce, with a 19.7 percent decrease."
