- A major international law enforcement operation in Accra, Ghana, has today resulted in the seizure of approximately a tonne of cocaine from a villa in the suburbs of the city. Four British men, two Ghanaian nationals and one German have been arrested.
Acting on intelligence from UK Customs, and with cooperation from the Spanish National Police, officers from the Ghanaian Narcotics Control Board raided the villa and found cocaine in a specially constructed concealment within the house.
Intelligence shows that this massive euro 115 million drugs haul was destined to be shipped to Europe and then on to the UK, according to information released by the British government today.
The British Customs Minister and Economic Secretary to the Treasury, John Healey, was pleased by the operation's success. "This huge cocaine haul demonstrates the importance of UK Customs working internationally to combat modern crime," he said.
- A sophisticated, international gang has been dismantled and a large shipment of cocaine has been prevented from causing harm on our streets, the Minister added. "Our priority is to continue to combat the drugs trade through intelligence-led operations like this."
West Africa port towns on many occasions have been used for trans-shipment for drugs destined for Europe. Most of these narcotics is produced in Asia or Latin America and only passes shortly through the African continent.
Relatively few such cases have been solved while the narcotics are on their African stop-over. Nigerian ports are most reputed for these services, while it occurs more seldom in Ghanaian ports.
